Winchester Jazz Festival presents an evening of Big Band Music from Belgarum Big Band! Featuring support from Crow and guest vocalists The Spitfire Sisters
Location: Winchester Guildhall
Belgarum Big Band
Belgarum Big Band are an exciting new big band based right here in Winchester, featuring musicians from all along the south coast and beyond. Founded in 2015, BBB have their roots firmly in the big band tradition - but with a particular fondness for exploring more modern repertoire.
Their first set will focus on the classic sounds of the swing era, featuring works made famous by the great Count Basie Orchestra and guest appearances from the Spitfire Sisters. Following that, they’ll explore a range of more modern jazz and Latin styles – including material from the libraries of the Buddy Rich Big Band, Bill Holman Band, the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra and Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band.
Crow are a three piece band from the South, comprised of Steve Christie (Keys), Doug Revolta (Bass), and Joe Pickering (Drums).
Crow perform many of Steve's original compositions as well as interesting new takes on standards and prog rock tunes. Their sound is given an extra dimension with the occasional use of vintage keyboard sounds such as Mellotron, Clavioline and other unusual electronic keyboards - many of them original instruments restored by Steve. Joe uses a fabulous range of percussive effects, and Doug's smooth yet funky bass playing adds to a fully rounded, satisfying sound.
The Spitfire Sisters
The Spitfire Sisters are a three part vocal harmony group hailing from the home of the Supermarine Spitfire on the sunny South Coast. The trio emerged onto the vintage music scene in 2011 and have been steadily building a reputation by recreating the vintage sounds of the ‘30s and ‘40s through nostalgic Andrews Sisters style harmonies. Band members Louisa Revolta, Anna Harding and Hannah Castleman have created a live act which includes numerous swinging classics and some old takes on some new tunes.
